September 25 - Jake Leg Stompers

For the Fall concert series opener, Mountain Valley Arts Council welcomes Jake Leg Stompers back to Errol Allan Park on September 25th with high hopes for no rain, since their previous concert had to be moved indoors. Lena’s Rolling Kitchen will be providing concessions.

Although the Jake Leg Stompers band members’ musical roots date much earlier, by 2006  they increasingly started taking their “Chicken-Fried Pre-war Hokum-billy Jug” music on the road, playing regional festivals whether or not they were asked to. Acclaimed for their spirited, eclectic, and wildly unpredictable street performances, the Stompers were even sometimes asked to play on the stage for actual money.

In their live shows, the Jake Leg Stompers present Pre-War Roots Music on period instruments in lively, authentic styles. The Stompers capture the rebellious spirit of pre-1941 American music from Memphis Jug bands to Appalachian Hillbilly to Fats Waller when folk music was still considered dangerous. You never know what unusual instruments this band will bring out so sit close to the stage.

Currently, the Stompers are cruising to stardom on the strength of their 3rd and greatest album, “Hill Country Hoodoo,” produced and recorded by Jimbo Mathus of Squirrel Nut Zippers fame at his studio in Como, MS. For this project, the Stompers were joined by Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars, Jimbo Mathus, the Rising Star Fife and Drum Band, Rev. John Wilkins (son of the late blues legend Robert Wilkins) and Mississippi cum Tokyo blues artist Steve Gardner.

“Hill Country Hoodoo” has received extensive airplay on XM satellite radio and is currently a top-selling album in both the blues and folk categories on CDBaby.com.

For more details about the individual band members and their records, check out their bios on jakelegstompers/bios.  You will laugh yourself silly and will just have to come see this band in person.

October 2 - Country Case Band

Mountain Valley Arts Council welcomes Country Case claims Albertville back Errol Allan Park on October 2nd for their second performance with MVAC. This band has been performing for 15 years and counting, including performances at Papa Dubi’s Restaurant and Legends in Albertville. Trent Slaton is the lead vocalist.

October 9 - Hard on the chickens

Mountain Valley Arts Council will host Hard on The Chickens on Thursday, October 9th from 6:30 – 8:30 PM at Errol Allan Park in downtown Guntersville. Bring your fan, folding chairs and friends. Lena’s Rolling Kitchen will provide concessions

Now that band name needs some explaining. The band derived its name from a neighbor’s dog that had to be muzzled because it was particularly fond of the laying hens. The neighbor described the dog as being “hard on the chickens”. It has more to do with the dog than the chickens. When you see the band’s logo, it all makes sense.

This trio plays classic rock, Motown blues, country, and Americana music and features an eclectic set list that emphasizes tight vocal harmonies. The band consists of Mark Thompson on guitar and vocals, Jimmy Rowell on bass and vocals, and John Elrod on percussion, vocals, and the occasional harmonica. Each member has been performing since their early teens which wasn’t just yesterday. Thompson and Elrod performed together in high school in the band Target.

Thompson played for many years with the late Pat Upton and Headline, the Downtown Horns, and Hillbilly Romeos. He is the featured guitarist/vocalist in reunion shows of WARM, a legendary band in the Southeast in the 60s and 70s.

Elrod is also an accomplished banjo player, and Rowell loves Bluegrass music and performed for many years in the Huntsville-based Pinhook Creek band.

Any change in venue due to bad weather will appear on MVAC’s Facebook page and MVAC’s website, mvacarts.org Thursday afternoon – most likely to Guntersville Town Hall on Blount Avenue.

October 16 - Groove from Huntsville

Mountain Valley Arts Council will feature the Huntsville-based band Groove in its free Fall Concerts in the Park on Thursday, October 16th from 6:30 – 8:30 PM at Errol Allan Park in downtown Guntersville. Bring your dance shoes, fans, folding chairs, and friends. Lena’s Rolling Kitchen food truck will be on-site.

Any change in venue due to harsh weather will be posted on MVAC’s Facebook page and MVAC’s website, mvacarts.org.

The band Groove got its start back in January 2007. Since then, they have refined the band lineup to include both male and female lead vocalists which provides the versatility to play a wide variety of 60s to present day dance-pop and funk cover standards.

The band is composed of Toni Hamilton on vocals, Lawrence Crawford on guitar and vocals, David Hughes on bass and vocals, Derrik Anderson on drums, Danny Bealer/Xavier Newsome on keyboards and vocals.

Come on out and groove with us! Thank you to generous MVAC members, the City of Guntersville, and the Lake Guntersville Chamber of Commerce, and concert attendees for making this concert series free to the whole community.

Triple Play has been rocking the Huntsville/Guntersville/Decatur and Hartselle area Since May of 2022! They continue to add classics to their setlists and will bring “Classic Rock the way it Should Be!”

Triple Play's roots include Scott Wagnon’s group “Fender Bender in 2018, and members from First Fellowship and Praise Band of First Baptist Church of Huntsville.

Current band members include Scott Wagnon on guitar and vocals , Tony Antoine on drums, and Chris Thompson on bass and vocals who have played in venues such as Shagnasty’s, Diamonds, the Crape Myrtle Festival, the Ardmore Car Show, and best of all, WhistleStop.

October 30 - Tosha Hill (Country)

Mountain Valley Arts Council will host the Tosha Hill, a crowd favorite for the past three years, on Thursday, October 23rd from 6:30 – 8:30 PM at Errol Allan Park in downtown Guntersville. Bring your folding chairs and friends. Leena’s Rolling Kitchen will provide concessions.

Alabama singer/songwriter Tosha Hill unleashes Shoals soul while staying true to her country roots in her debut EP, Forty Miles, a collection of 5 songs co-written with her father, Billy. A regular at Nashville's Bluebird Cafe, Tosha has also had co-writes with Rock and Roll Hall of Famers: John Oates (Hall & Oates), Spooner Oldham, and Brenda Lee (Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree). She has shared the stage with Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, John Paul White (Civil Wars), Randy Owen (Alabama), Shenandoah, and Lonestar.

Matt Wake of AL.com says, "Tosha Hill has mononym-level talent. As a roots-music singer, she’s got such pure tone and feel they - if combined with the right songs, business and luck – could maybe make a woman not just known but known by just one name. As in Dolly. Emmylou. Ronstadt. Hill is that special on the mic, as heard on her new EP, “Forty Miles.” The five-song set is one of the best Americana recordings you’ll hear this year by an artist under the age of 30."

Tosha’s musical journey started from performing at churches in her hometown of Muscle Shoals to honing and crafting her talents in the legendary recording studios among the originators of the Muscle Shoals Sound. Those echoes of inspiration resonate to this day leaving its lasting influence on her as a young, new artist and her music. Having walked in the footsteps of some of music’s greatest performers, she exhibits an exceptional presence onstage that leaves the audiences wanting more. Tosha used a work ethic and support from her dad to cultivate a sound that is pleasing just as much as it is original.

Any change in venue due to bad weather will be posted on MVAC’s Facebook page and MVAC’s website, mvacarts.org.

Thank you to generous MVAC members, the City of Guntersville, and the Lake Guntersville Chamber of Commerce, and concert attendees for making this concert series possible.
